Home from home dog boarding vs kennels

For many dog owners, leaving your dog behind while travelling or during a busy period can be stressful. You want to ensure your dog is safe, well cared for and as happy as possible while you’re away.

Traditionally, kennels have been the go-to option for boarding dogs, but in recent years, home-from-home dog boarding has become increasingly popular — and for good reason.

Here’s why choosing Berry’s Pet Services home from home boarding benefits over kennels.

A familiar, comfortable environment

Kennels can be noisy and unfamiliar, which can be unsettling for some dogs – particularly those not used to being around many other animals. Not all kennels are part of someone’s property and so don’t have anyone on site overnight, which may not be suitable for a lot of dogs.

Home-from-home boarding offers a quieter, more familiar setting that closely resembles you dog’s routine at home. Dogs stay in a family home with a dedicated carer(s), meaning they’re more likely to feel relaxed and secure.

At Berry’s Pet Services, we have two resident dogs – Minka & Crempog – who will help your dog to settle and feel at home and live in a beautiful rural environment for your dog to explore.

Personal attention and tailored care

In a kennel, staff may be responsible for looking after dozens of dogs at once – making it hard to give each animal one-to-one attention.

With home boarding at Berry’s Pet Services, your dog is cared for by me with help from my husband too – meaning your dog’s needs, habits and quirks are better understood and catered to.

From feeding routines, medication provision, favourite toys and walking preferences – everything can be tailored to your dog.

Our sofas are your dogs sofas and your dog can sleep where they want to – no kennels here. We can provide crates for dogs who prefer having their own space and are happy to leave crates open or close them, depending on your wishes.

We also have three floors and can provide your dog with their own space at any time, if they prefer to take themselves and relax on their own.

Social interaction without overcrowding

While kennels might involve your dog being surrounded by many other dogs they’ve never met before – which can lead to anxiety or overstimulation – at Berry’s Pet Services, we have five dogs maximum boarding with us at any given time (including our two resident dogs) and plenty of space to allow your dog(s) their own space if they prefer.

This creates a more balanced social environment and allows for natural interaction without the stress that often comes with overcrowded spaces. We allow our boarding dogs to go where they want to go in our home – some are shadows, others find a space somewhere and claim it as their own!

Lower stress levels

Dogs are creatures of habit and can become stressed when taken out of their routine. The hustle and bustle of a kennel — with unfamiliar smells, barking dogs and a different daily schedule can be overwhelming. Home boarding maintains a closer resemblance to your dog’s usual routine, which can help reduce stress and anxiety while you’re away.

We’re more than happy to follow your instructions to a tee – and you’re very welcome to provide written instructions for us to follow!

At Berry’s Pet Services, we also offer a local dog walking service and so will tailor your dog’s exercise to their usual routine. If they enjoy walking with other dogs, they can and if they don’t – they can have solo walks.

They’ll also enjoy the comfort of sleeping on a multitude of comfy dog beds, sofas or people beds, rather than a kennel pen, with regular access to a variety of safe, secure outdoor spaces with lots of smells and exploring to be done.

Many owners feel reassured knowing their dog is treated as part of the family, not confined to a concrete run or wire enclosure.

Better communication for peace of mind

We send regular updates, photos and videos – however often you’d like to receive, we’ll provide! This level of communication is harder to come by in a kennel environment, particularly when kennel staff are not always there.

Ideal for older dogs or those with special needs

If your dog is older, on medication or has anxiety issues then the calmer and more personalised nature of home boarding is often a better fit. Berry’s Pet Services can adapt the pace and nature of our care to suit your dog’s physical or emotional needs.
